Germany wins Fifa Confederations Cup in Russia

Germany’s players lift the trophy after winning the 2017 Confederations Cup final football match between Chile and Germany at the Saint Petersburg Stadium in Saint Petersburg on July 2, 2017.

Lars Stindl’s simple tap-in, following a costly first-half blunder by Marcelo Diaz, was enough to give Germany a 1-0 win over Chile in the Confederations Cup final on Sunday.
Diaz’s momentary lapse in concentration let Timo Werner rob him of possession, draw the goalkeeper and pass to Stindl, who scored into an empty net on 20 minutes in Saint Petersburg.

This is the first time Germany, the defending world champions, have won the Confederations Cup in the eighth edition of the pre-World Cup tournament.

The video assistant referee (VAR) again came into the spotlight as Chile’s Gonzalo Jara was lucky not to be sent off in the second half.

Despite his elbow in the face of Werner midway through the second half being reviewed by the VAR, the defender was only booked.

Werner, Stindl and Leon Goretzka all finished with three goals but RB Leipzig striker Werner took the top scorer’s prize by virtue of also supplying two assists.

Despite dominating for long spells, Chile failed to turn 61 percent possession and 20 shots — compared to the Germans’ eight — into goals.

The South Americans kept the same team which squeezed past Portugal 3-0 on a penalty shoot out after a goalless draw in the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, Germany’s only change from the team which beat Mexico 4-1 in the last four saw defender Shkodran Mustafi replace Benjamin Henrichs.

Chilean fans turned the Saint Petersburg Stadium into a sea of red and merciless pressing by La Roja early on saw Charles Aranguiz and Arturo Vidal cause havoc in the Germany defence.

Eduardo Vargas had the first clear shot on 11 minutes which flew into the grateful arms of Germany goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

The South Americans then wasted a golden chance when Vidal’s shot was blocked by Ter Stegen and Alexis Sanchez could not connect with the loose ball.

It proved costly as Diaz’s calamitous mistake and Werner’s quick thinking led to Stindl’s match-winner.

Diaz dithered on the ball on the edge of his own box, allowing Werner to pounce. He then drew lunging Chile goalkeeper Claudio Bravo and squared to Stindl, who tapped home.

Having fallen behind, Chile upped the pressure to force an equaliser which left space at the back for Germany to counter-attack.

Julian Draxler fired wide of the post, then Goretzka, who scored twice in the 4-1 semi-final win over Mexico, wasted a great chance by firing straight at Bravo just before the break.

Chilean tempers started to fray, and approaching the hour mark Joshua Kimmich squared up to Vidal, who pushed the German away. The Bayern Munich team-mates were both booked.

Then Werner was left clutching his jaw after an elbow in the face from Jara near the touchline, the Serbian referee deciding to award a yellow card to the defender after reviewing the incident.

The South Americans battered the German goal in the final 20 minutes but Sanchez’s shot was blocked and Ter Stegen then saved from Eduardo Vargas.

With time running out, both Vidal and substitute Angelo Sagal fired over the bar, but the German defence held firm.

Lionel Messi finally weds his long-time girlfriend Antonela Roccuzzo.

Some of the biggest names in world football gathered in Argentina on Friday, June 30, to see Barcelona striker Lionel Messi wed his long-time girlfriend Antonela Roccuzzo.

Soccer stars Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba, Angel di Maria, and Javier Mascherano were among the many who turned out.

An extra 350 police were drafted in to provide security for the event, which took place in Rosario, the city where Messi grew up before heading to Barcelona, where he has spent a playing career that has included winning FIFA’s World Player of the Year trophy five times.

The city is in the heart of Argentina’s breadbasket but drug trafficking in the region has grown in recent years and the homicide rate has soared.

Messi met Roccuzzo, who is also from Rosario when they were growing up. The couple has two children, Thiago, 4, and Mateo, 21 months.

100 suspected Badoo cult members arrested

The Lagos State Government has arrested 100 suspected members of the dreaded cult group, Badoo, who have been terrorising residents of the state, especially in the Ikorodu axis.

The state government also cautioned residents to desist from carrying out jungle justice on suspected members of the gang, as the government would leave no stone unturned to bring the perpetrators of any dastardly act to justice.

For some time now, members of the Badoo cult group have been fingered in violent killings in Ikorodu axis, a development which had prompted some suspected members of the group to be lynched through mob action.

The 100 suspects were arrested in a joint operation carried out by men of the Lagos State Police Command, Rapid Response Squad, Odua People’s Congress, as well as local vigilantes, including Onyabo, in Ikorodu on Saturday.

As at Sunday morning, the number of arrested suspects had risen to 100.

The team, in the operation which started early in the morning of Saturday, moved around Ikorodu and combed the suspected hideouts of the members of the gang from street to street.

The combined security team led by Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, Lagos Police Command, Mr. Imohimi Edgal and the RRS Commander, ACP Olatunji Disu, specifically combed black spots and suspected areas like Ikorodu, Ibeshe, Ita Maja, Ijede, Ipakodo and other areas, arresting about 100 suspects for questioning.

The exercise was a follow-up to a meeting which the National Coordinator of Odua Peoples’ Congress, Chief Gani Adams and Onyabo leaders held with security chiefs in the state on Friday.

Confirming the operation, Public Relation Officer of Lagos State Police Command, ASP Olarinde Famous-Cole, said about 40 police and RRS vehicles were used for the operation; adding that the exercise was a part of the ongoing efforts to rid the state of the activities of the reprehensible cult group.

He said: “We can confirm the arrest of 100 suspected members of the dreaded cult group, Badoo; and they are helping with ongoing investigation into the activities of the gang.

“Government is on top of the situation and we will like to use this medium to urge the people to desist from jungle justice.

“We would also like to assure residents that they are free to go about their normal activities without let or hindrance, as the police and other security agencies in the state are poised to make the state uncomfortable and hot for criminal elements,” Famous-Cole said.

THE REAL POGBA WILL NOW BE SEEN WITH THE ARRIVAL OF MATIC IN MAN UTD SQUAD

It was hard not to feel a little sorry for Paul Pogba during his first season back at Manchester United. Handed the unenviable crown as the world’s most-expensive footballer, the Frenchman’s transition was hardly helped by the fact he so rarely got the opportunity to play in his favourite role.

But the news that Nemanja Matic is on the verge of completing a £40 million transfer from Chelsea will be music to Pogba’s ears, with Jose Mourinho finally having found the key to balancing his midfield and allowing the former Juventus man to play from his natural position on the left of the central three.

With Matic’s imminent arrival comes the chance for Mourinho to finally use Pogba as part of a trio in midfield. United did increasingly use the 4-3-3 formation towards the end of last term, but that was regularly for the sake of getting Marouane Fellaini into the starting XI at a time when the Europa League quest had become their one and only focus.

Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye remains the General Overseer, Worldwide of The Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG.

Leke Adeboye, the clergyman’s last son and Personal Assistant said the clarification is coming on the heels of misrepresentation of Pastor E. A Adeboye’s announcement at the Annual Ministers Thanksgiving held at the redemption camp today that the Church Nigeria is now to be led by Pastor Joseph Obayemi.

This will be a year that you will remember for good- Archbishop M.E. Benson-Idahosa

The Archbishop of Church of God Mission International, Most.Rev. M.E. Benson-Idahosa has made a declarative prophesy for the new year. She made her good will message (titled empowered to do exploits) known through the church's devotional manual, Above only.

This is mama message for the year 2017

EMPOWERED TO DO EXPLOITS
Dearly beloved,

I welcome you to 2017 with great joy and happiness. This is a year that we are being empowered to do great exploits. I want you to know that you are important and valuable to God.

God depends so much on you and you are his extended leg on earth, His voice to echo what He came to do and His eyes to see what is going on around you.

In Judges 6, Gideon was working in the garden and all of a sudden, an angel appeared and said to him "man of valour I see you and I want you to go and deliver the children of Israel". God is asking me to tell you that there is valour in you, there is strength in you and you have been empowered, so you should go and do exploits.

If God calls a man, a man of valour, He has already equipped him, so you better believe it and work in line with it. I assure you that no power of the enemy can stop you.

Beloved, you shall do great exploits in every area of your life. You should not look at your smallness and begin to criticize yourself because God will not take permission from any man to bless you.

You are equipped to do exploits. As one man, Gideon defeated the Philistines, that is how God is going to use you. You will smite the enemy as one man. You are going forth in His name to do exploits with goodness and mercy following you.

In 2017, you must know Jesus and make Him known to others. This will be a year that you will remember for good

Happy New and prosperous Year!
Most Rev. M.E. Benson-Idahosa,
Archbishop, CGMI

A young Babcock undergraduate commits suicide after send a happy new year message

A 19-year-old undergraduate of Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, Verishima Unokyur, has committed suicide in his parent’s home in Mafoluku, in the Oshodi area of Lagos State.

According to the punch;the 200-level Social Work student had on Tuesday sent a text message to his best friend, welcoming him into the New Year.

“See you in heaven,” he reportedly said at the end of the message.

Our correspondent learnt that the Benue State indigene committed suicide between that time and Wednesday when his corpse was discovered, by hanging himself with his tie.

His immediate younger brother, Asor, was reportedly asleep at the time.

Asor said their mother was also away, adding that his brother never showed any sign that he would commit suicide.

He said, “I was sleeping when my phone rang and when I checked, I saw that it was my mum calling. She said I should come and open the door for her. As I was coming down, I saw my brother dangling like a pendulum from where he hanged himself. That was around 7am.

“He didn’t complain about anything. But I remember that before I went to sleep, he was quiet. I asked what was wrong with him, but he said nothing. My mum had just the two of us; he was my elder brother.”

Our correspondent gathered from a close family friend that the victim had told his mother that he would die anytime.

He explained that the mother, who was alarmed, took him to different prayer houses, which however, did not stop Verishima from killing himself.

He said, “The two children lost their father about 15 years ago. It was their mother that had been responsible for their upkeep and she made them comfortable. She is a top employee of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria.

“He had been telling the mother that he had the feeling that he would die soon.

“The mother attends one of the Pentecostal churches and so when the boy said he would die, she took him to the church and they prayed for him.

“A night to the day of this incident, the boy picked his phone and sent a text message to his best friend, wishing him a happy new year. At the end of that message, he wrote, ‘see you in heaven’. It was the following morning that his remains were found dangling from his tie.”

A former teacher of the victim, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described him as an introvert.

“When he was in secondary school, he always kept to himself. Nobody knew anything about him,” he added.

Our correspondent learnt that policemen from the Mafoluku division visited the scene and took photographs of the victim before calling an ambulance to convey the corpse to a mortuary.

It was learnt that the mother had been in a state of shock since the incident  happened, as symapthisers besieged the family house on Sunkanmi Awoyingbo Street, Mafoluku, to condole with them.

A check on the Facebook page of Verishima showed he was an avid fan of DC Comics. He posted photos of super heroes on his cover page at different times.

Our correspondent also observed that some of his friends had started paying tributes to his memory on his Facebook wall and those of other relatives, who posted the news.

One Ifeoluwa Comfort said, “When I heard about this sad news yesterday (Wednesday), I couldn’t get myself out of the shock for good 20 minutes. I couldn’t believe it.

“What a loss to his family and the world at large. I still can’t think of what could have made him do that to himself. God of mercy, I pray you forgive him.”

Another, Moses Mow, said, “Oh my God!  I went to the same lesson with this boy. He was a good kid. Why did this happen?”

The Babcock Public Relations Officer, Joshua Suleiman, confirmed the studentship of Verishima.

He said, “The incident didn’t happen in Babcock. It happened in the deceased’s home. He was a 200-level Social Work student. From the university’s records, he was an easy-going and obedient student.”

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, said the victim was pronounced dead at a hospital.

She said, “The family woke up to find his body dangling from where he hanged  himself. He

.was rushed to a hospital where he was confirmed dead. The case is under investigation.”
